Second Coming | 2015
35 mins
Created for Ballet Black.
Inspired by Yeats’ poem and Grimm’s fairy tales, Bruce has created a new narrative ballet, "Second Coming".
In this work, Bruce presents a hybrid fairy tale in an imaginary world, telling a story that is timeless and universal, filled with beauty and darkness, irony and humour, and above all the content of the human heart.
Choreographed and directed by MARK BRUCE
Costume Designer DOROTHEE BRODRÜCK
Music by Mark Bruce, Tom Waits, Isobel Campbell, Mark Lanegan, Shostakovich, Debussy, Elgar
★★★★ The Observer
“a hallucinatory mash-up of masque and fable....."
★★★ The Guardian
"Bruce is a singular voice in British dance. There’s a near-deranged eclecticism in his choices of music and in the mix of myth, fairytale and mysticism from which he creates his own dark stories. ..if the materials are chaotic, Bruce and the excellent designer Dorothee Brodrück make a virtue of that, creating such striking imagery and surreally unexpected connections that we’re happy to go along for the ride..."
Londondance.com
"It promised to be an irresistible fusion of talents and so it was."
★★★ Evening Standard
".....a commitment to new choreography that punches above its weight."
Dance Tabs
".....conjure wonderful atmospheres over what is a 35-minute roller coaster ride featuring devils, monsters, voodoo and formal dance sections."
★★★★ Bach Track
"...showing off the dancers of Ballet Black to great advantage, this was a highly enjoyable end to the evening."
